FIBA 2014: Lithuania vs France (3rd Place Match)

For Lithuania and France, the journey is far from over at the 2014 FIBA World Cup after losses in the semifinals.

Saturday, the two sides will meet in the 3rd Place Game for one final fleeting shot at glory on the international stage before the United States takes on Serbia in the final.

Lithuania encountered Team USA at precisely the wrong time as Mike Krzyzewski's team seemed to hit full stride, while France rallied and lost a heartbreaker at the hands of Serbia late.

Below, let's profile the two teams and everything else there is to know about Saturday's showdown.

FIBA 2014: France vs Serbia Semi Finals September 12, 2014

France looks to continue their recent run of success in international basketball with a FIBA World Cup semifinal matchup against Serbia on Friday. A win would put the French team in the final against the United States just one year after winning Eurobasket 2013 for the first time in the nation's history.

Led by Boris Diaw and Thomas Heurtel, France knocked Spain -- arguably the favorite behind Team USA -- out of a major tournament for the second straight year Wednesday with a 65-52 win in the quarterfinals. A year ago in the semifinals of Eurobasket, France upset Spain, 75-72, in overtime.

While Serbia isn't having a historically special level of success in international basketball like France, the team's blowout win over Brazil in the semifinals was impressive. Holding a talented team to 24 second-half points is nothing to brush off.

That means we should be in store for a pretty interesting game Friday as Diaw, Heurtel, Nicolas Batum and others look to keep France on the rise. These two teams met in the group stage and France took the game by the narrowest of margins, 74-73.

FIBA 2014: USA vs Mexico Round of 16 September 6 2014

On the surface, all has gone as expected for the United States at the 2014 FIBA World Cup. The favorites captured Group C with ease, winning their five games by an average of 33.2 points and not allowing a single team to come within 20.

From a pure results-based judgement, the United States have rarely looked better. In reality, the U.S. heads into Saturday's Round of 16 game against Mexico with a treasure trove of questions in need of answering.

First, the shooting. The United States shot a paltry 34.4 percent from beyond the three-point arc in their first five games, ranking 13th among the 24 teams that took the trip to Spain.

Stephen Curry and James Harden, expected to be among the team's most reliable three-point shooters along with Klay Thompson, have struggled mightily from the field. Curry is knocking down a disappointing 37.8 percent of his shots overall and has at times consigned himself to a facilitating role out of frustration. Harden has been more effective on average but has made less than a quarter of his shots from the shorter FIBA three-point line.

Asian most top Basketball team Philippines still now can’t win a single match in FIBA Basketball world championship 2014. They lost against Puerto Rico, Argentina, Greece, Croatia which was really unbelieveable by Philippines. We are writing down in our every news about Philippines Baksetball, that Philippines people enjoy Basketball very much and they always try to encourage their team by media, social network & street crowding which is really a great achievement for Philippines Basketball team.

Senegal Basketball performance in this competition is average level. Thoug they win in 2 match but lost with big difference in another 2. Their losing against Argentina & Greece was shame.

Spain LIGA BBVA: Real Madrid vs Cordoba

Real Madrid begin their 2014-15 La Liga campaign with a clash against top-flight newcomers Cordoba at the Bernabeu on Monday night.

Carlo Ancelotti's side will want to rebound quickly after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Friday.

After finishing deadlocked at 1-1 with Diego Simeone's men in the first leg on Tuesday, the defending European champions were unable to break down the robust system of Atleti, watching one of six targeted titles slip through their grasp.

Monday's clash with Cordoba, however, won't be anywhere near as stern a test.

Perhaps the most interesting storyline heading into Los Blancos' league opener is what system Ancelotti will deploy.

Having swept aside Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup with a fluid 4-4-2, the Italian switched back to the more familiar 4-3-3 for both games against Atletico, struggling to penetrate Los Rojiblancos' two banks of four in the absence of Angel Di Maria.

Complicating the issue is Cristiano Ronaldo's questionable fitness. After being substituted at half-time in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup, the Portuguese played only 45 minutes again on Friday, coming on for Toni Kroos after the break.

The need to rest Ronaldo in what is a small turnaround between games will need to be weighed against doing the same for James Rodriguez, who still looks rusty after an arduous World Cup campaign.

The solution to that issue for Ancelotti may well be reverting to the 4-4-2 showcased against Sevilla, using either the Ballon d'Or winner or the Colombian alongside Karim Benzema up front, reducing the physical workload for one of the pair by taking them away from the wing.

Sunday is the one of the biggest days for a wrestling fan has it is the Royal Rumble this Sunday. The 2014 30-man over the top rope extravaganza begins at 8 p.m. on Pay-Per-View. You can also watch the annual event on your smartphone, tablet, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in addition to watching the pay-per-view on television. Check out WWE.com for details on how to watch the show that will be taking place from theConsol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This year’s Royal Rumble match itself seems almost anti-climatic. Ever since it was revealed that “The Animal” Batista was making his return to the WWE, it was assumed that he would win the event. Wrestling news sites announced that Batista, who left the promotion almost four years after he got fed up with the PG content of the shows, would win the Royal Rumble and go into a feud with current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton. What that means is that the Rumble result is known and Orton is set to retain his title against John Cena on Sunday. That knocks out two matches on the card that people will make people care even less about the show. The only question now is what number the WWE gives Batista to enter the match.

Besides the already announced Batista victory (unofficially of course), the other big story of the Royal Rumble event is that CM Punk was given the honor of starting the Rumble at number one … giving him no chance of winning the match. However, Punk is involved in a slow building feud against The Authority (Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and Kane) and his number one draw is only part of the story. Reports have Punk in a match with Triple H at WrestleMania 30 so his appearance in the Rumble is only to stay in the match for an hour and eventually get done in by The Authority for his sins.

The remaining matches really doesn’t offer much in the way of anything interesting. There are three other matches before the big two bouts so many will be eating, drinking and most likely talking during these opening matches (although Goldust has been the most underrated wrestler on the WWE roster). Here a quick preview of the undercard matches for the 2014 Royal Rumble.
New Age Outlaws vs. Goldust and Cody Rhodes for the WWE Tag Team Championship

Not much to say about this match. The nostalgia of the “Road Dogg” Jesse James and “Bad A**” Billy Gunn has officially worn off and now is over. As a friend of mine said during this past Friday’s Smackdown telecast, “Billy Gunn looks dead.” Goldust and Rhodes are a good tag team and I see them holding onto the belts at least until WrestleMania where they should lose the belts to a team that is extremely over with fans … The Usos.

Winners: Goldust and Cody Rhodes

Daniel Bryan vs. Bray Wyatt

The biggest waste of 2013 was Bryan and how the WWE refused to give him the WWE Title. After joining The Wyatt Family a month ago, he turned back into a fan favorite and took apart Wyatt inside a cage after a match where they tagged together. The final 5-8 minutes of that Raw two weeks ago created probably one of the best moments I’ve ever seen in my wrestling watching life. Wyatt has been getting a good push and rumors have him wrestling Cena at WrestleMania 30 although who knows how they will get that feud started. Bryan will win this match and if he is in the Rumble, he could make some noise.

Winner: Daniel Bryan

Big Show vs. Brock Lesnar

Reports have Lesnar taking on the Undertaker at WrestleMania and he has been booked as a monster since returning to the WWE. All of sudden, the Big Show comes out and manhandles him and makes him look awful. After demolishing Lesnar, Show smiles, kisses babies and is in a tag match with Rey Mysterio against The Real Americans on the final Smackdown before the Rumble. The WWE have made a terrible strategic mistake in how they have booked this match but everyone knows how it will end and not with a Big Show victory.

Winner: Brock Lesnar

After this event, The Road to WrestleMania will officially have started and the speculation will go into overdrive. With the WWE Network set to begin in February, the big names will come out including the one and only Hulk Hogan. There are even rumors saying that the WWE and WCW legend Sting are close to an agreement for him to come in. If that happens, it may turn out that Sting and Undertaker could face-off instead of Lesnar v. Undertaker. Of course this all speculation but this is the time of year that all wrestling fans love.

UFC 167: Georges St-Pierre vs Johny Hendricks

Former heavyweight champions Frank Mir and Alistair Overeem, both in dire need of a victory, will meet Nov. 16 at UFC 167 in Las Vegas, promotion officials confirmed Thursday night.

The bout was reported earlier Thursday by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Mir, a two-time UFC titleholder (lineal and interim), has dropped three fights in a row. He was on the receiving end of technical knockouts in two of those losses. In between the TKOs, Mir was roughed up for three rounds by Daniel Cormier during a lopsided unanimous decision.

In his most recent fight, on Saturday at UFC 164, Mir was stopped in the first round by Josh Barnett. Although Mir was being outclassed in the fight, many observers complained afterward that referee Rob Hinds’ stoppage at the 1:56 mark came too quickly.

The loss dropped Mir’s professional record to 16-8. Despite his recent slide, Mir remains ranked No. 10 among heavyweights by ESPN.com.

Overeem, the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, has lost two fights in a row — both by knockout. An opening-round front kick to the chin by Travis Browne on Aug. 17 sent Overeem (36-13 with one no contest) to the canvas. Browne then delivered punches to the face of Overeem, who could no longer defend himself, forcing referee Mario Yamasaki to jump in at the 4:08 mark.

The Mir-Overeem bout becomes the third announced for UFC 167. In the main event, welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre puts his title on the line against hard-hitting Johny Hendricks.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans will face ex-middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger Chael Sonnen in the co-main event.
