The second game in a back-to-back, home-and-home series comes to the Air Canada Centre Saturday night (7 p.m., CBC, TSN Radio 1050):

1. The Sabres cleaned house Wednesday, firing their GM and coach, hiring Pat LaFontaine as president of hockey operations and restoring former coach Ted Nolan behind the bench.

Friday’s game was dubbed “Back to the Future” in Buffalo, and reunited fans with two legendary names from the past. In Toronto, Leaf fans will get their first glimpse of the Sabres since the line brawl with the Leafs in the pre-season.

2. Leaf fans get their first look at big John Scott, whose role in that line brawl in the pre-season may have made him hockey enemy No. 1 in Toronto. Scott, though, downplayed the return match in Toronto, saying “you guys (media) reminded everyone over the past few days, but we’re professionals, we’ve put it in the past, lets play hockey.”

3. The Leafs are without their top three centres, which puts a ton of pressure on the remaining roster and on coach Randy Carlyle. When asked if he’s ever coached in a situation where his top three pivots are out, Carlyle said “well, that’s a new one for me . . . you make up plans A, B, and C and I think we’re on F now.”

What that plan is, for now, seems to be using Marlies callup Trevor Smith on the second line between Joffrey Lupul and David Clarkson. That was the way things pointed Friday in Buffalo at practice. Jay McClement played the second line pivot Wednesday in Minnesota, and turned in a season-high 23 minutes. But Carlyle said he intends to give Smith a chance offensively. Smith has 12 points in seven games for the Marlies so far this season.

4. Jonathan Bernier started in Buffalo Friday night, which means James Reimer likely gets the nod Saturday in Toronto. The Leaf goalies have a combined 1.54 GAA over the last seven games.
